Nepali Congress 15th General Convention: Preliminary list of candidates made public



KATHMANDU: The preliminary list of candidates for various posts, including office-bearer positions, in the 15th General Convention of the Nepali Congress has been made public.

The Nepali Congress Central Election Committee released the first list of candidates. The party will have 24 office bearers, comprising one president, four vice presidents including one senior vice president, three general secretaries, 15 joint general secretaries and one treasurer.

Under the party statute, the president can nominate four joint general secretaries and one treasurer. Therefore, 19 office bearers will be elected. According to the preliminary list, 79 candidates have filed nominations for the 19 elected office-bearer positions.

Three candidates have filed nominations for party president: incumbent President Gagan Thapa, former Joint General Secretary Kishore Singh Rathore and former regional president Shyam Krishna Khadgi.

For senior vice president, Bishwa Prakash Sharma is the only candidate on the preliminary list.

Ten candidates have filed nominations for the two open vice president positions: Govinda Bhattarai, Dr Chandrakant Bhandari, Prof. Dr Chandramohan Yadav, Deepak Giri, Devraj Chalise, Dhanraj Gurung, Madhu Acharya, Dr Minendra Prasad Rijal, Surendraraj Pandey and another candidate listed by the election committee.

Pushpa Bhusal has filed her nomination for the women’s vice president position. Five candidates—Jeevan Pariyar, Farmullah Mansur, Binod Kumar Chaudhary, Ranjit Karna and Sita Gurung—have filed nominations for the inclusive vice president position.

For the two open general secretary positions, nominations have been filed by Amarsingh Pun, Udaya Shumsher Rana, Gururaj Ghimire, Nainsingh Mahar, Pradeep Poudel, Dr Sunil Sharma and Dr Santosh Upadhyay.

Dr Dila Sangraula Pant, Mahalaxmi Upadhyay (Dina) and Rita Khanal have filed nominations for the women’s general secretary position.

For the 14 joint general secretary positions, Nanu Bastola and Pratima Gautam are contesting for the women’s seat.

For the joint general secretary position, nominations have been filed by Ajay Babu Shiwakoti, Amrit Kumar Aryal, Devendra Kandel, Dinesh Koirala, Dilliram Subedi, Bikash Koirala, Bimal Raj Chhetri, Ramesh Prasad Dhamala, Ramhari Khatiwada and Rajiv Dhungana.

Narendra Paswan, Prakash Rasaili Snehi, Man Bahadur Nepali and Laxmi Pariyar have filed nominations for the Dalit joint general secretary position.

For the Madhesi joint general secretary position, the candidates are Ajay Kumar Chaurasia, Abhishek Pratap Shah, Kiran Yadav, Nagina Yadav, Manish Kumar Mishra, Mahendra Yadav, Muktakumari Yadav and Rampaltan Shah.

Jagadishwar Narsingh KC, Manoj Mani Acharya and Shubha Ram Basnet have filed nominations for the Khas Arya joint general secretary position.

For the Tharu joint general secretary position, nominations have been filed by Tejulal Chaudhary, Yogendra Chaudhary and Surendra Prasad Chaudhary.

Athar Kamal Musalman, Abdul Sattar and Dr Firdos Alam are contesting for the Muslim joint general secretary position.

For the backward region joint general secretary position, the candidates are Jiwan Bahadur Shahi, Karna Bahadur Budha, Janak Raj Giri, Ram Bahadur Bista, Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, Min Bahadur Bham and Rajan Kunwar.

Angelu Sherpa, Nagendra Kumar Kumal, Babukrishna Sapkota and Yogesh Gauchan Thakali have filed nominations for the joint general secretary position representing minorities or persons with disabilities.

A significant number of candidates have also filed nominations for central committee membership, according to the election committee.

Election Committee Member Secretary Raju Katuwal said that those wishing to file objections to the preliminary list can do so from 10 am to noon today, in accordance with the election procedures.
