Dr. Hak Ja Han nominated for 2026 Nobel Peace Prize

NEW YORK: The Universal Peace Federation (UPF) International has announced that its co-founder, Dr. Hak Ja Han, has been nominated for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.

The nomination was submitted by Dr. Ján Figeľ, former European Union Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief and current president of FOREF Europe. It recognizes Dr. Han’s long-standing contributions to global peace efforts, interfaith dialogue, humanitarian initiatives, and reconciliation, particularly concerning the Korean Peninsula.

In his nomination, Dr. Figeľ highlighted several of Dr. Han’s major initiatives. These include promoting interfaith harmony through the appointment of thousands of Peace Ambassadors worldwide, organizing international “Rally of Hope” events to encourage peaceful reunification of the Korean Peninsula, and establishing the Sunhak Peace Prize to honor individuals contributing to global peace.

Her efforts also extend to collaboration with the United Nations through organizations such as UPF and the Women’s Federation for World Peace, both of which hold General Consultative Status with the UN Economic and Social Council.

Additionally, she has proposed the creation of a peace park in the Korean Demilitarized Zone under the 38th Parallel Peace Initiative and supported cultural diplomacy through international performances by the Little Angels Children’s Folk Ballet of Korea.

Dr. Figeľ praised Dr. Han’s lifelong dedication to peacebuilding, stating that her work has consistently fostered dialogue and cooperation across religious, political, and cultural divides.

UPF International President Dr. Tageldin Hamad also commended her contributions, describing her efforts as a sustained commitment to promoting peace through institutional development, global dialogue, and humanitarian engagement.

Born in present-day North Korea, Dr. Han has devoted her life to advancing reconciliation and strengthening families and communities as the foundation for lasting peace.

She co-founded the Women’s Federation for World Peace in 1992 and the Universal Peace Federation in 2005, both of which have expanded into global networks supporting peace initiatives.

Meanwhile, reports regarding Dr. Han’s current detention have raised concerns among international observers and policymakers.

The Nobel Peace Prize nomination process remains confidential, with hundreds of candidates nominated each year. A nomination does not guarantee selection but reflects recognition of significant contributions to peace and international cooperation.

The Universal Peace Federation International is a global nonprofit organization that promotes peace through dialogue, education, and collaborative initiatives, and holds General Consultative Status with the UN Economic and Social Council.
