Former police officer accused of rape arrested from India

KATHMANDU: Police have arrested former police officer Bhupendra Singh Thagunna, who was accused of rape, from Bengaluru, India.

A team from the Crime Investigation Office took Thagunna into custody and sent him to the District Police Office, Birendranagar, Surkhet, for further investigation.

A young woman from Jajarkot had filed a complaint against Thagunna, accusing him of rape. Seeking justice, the victim had been staging a hunger strike at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu since Mangsir 25.

Police said an arrest warrant had been issued against Thagunna by the Surkhet District Court, following which he had gone into hiding. He was arrested while absconding in India.

Thagunna had earlier been dismissed from service by the Koshi Province Police Office in Kartik, after failing to report for duty.
