Flood protection plan must be based on technical study: Rabi Lamichhane

CHITWAN: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chair Rabi Lamichhane has stressed the need for both immediate and long-term measures, guided by technical assessments, to protect Narayangadh Bazaar and nearby settlements from erosion along the Narayani River.

During an inspection of the Gaureshwor Pashupati Temple area along the riverbank, Lamichhane held discussions with members of the temple management committee and local stakeholders. He said that decisions on flood control and river protection should not be taken in haste without proper technical assessments.

Lamichhane said a technical team had been mobilised in coordination with the Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport immediately after he was informed about the growing risk of river erosion.

He said the team had been instructed to develop both immediate intervention measures and a long-term protection plan to safeguard Narayangadh Bazaar against the threat of potentially severe flooding in the future.

“Whether a particular area can be technically protected or not is a major question. Decisions made in haste without proper technical studies will not benefit anyone,” Lamichhane said.

He emphasised that protecting the lives of local residents must remain the foremost priority while addressing flood and erosion risks.

“This is not about taking credit; it is about saving lives,” he said.

Lamichhane also stressed that a comprehensive safety plan for the marketplace should take into account the possibility of more severe floods in the coming years. He urged all concerned authorities and stakeholders to follow the recommendations of technical experts while implementing river protection measures.
