KATHMANDU: A total of 1,341 bodies have been recovered so far from the devastating flood that occurred in the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa on August 26, while 4,044 people remain missing.
According to the latest details released by the Police Headquarters, Naxal, this morning, 325 of the recovered bodies were women, 523 were men and 493 were in an unidentifiable condition, said Nepal Police Central Spokesperson and Deputy Inspector General of Police Abinarayan Kafle.
Of those reported missing, 2,863 are Nepali men and 575 are Nepali women, while 269 are foreign nationals, including 332 men and five women, Spokesperson Kafle said. Police said security agencies were continuing search and rescue operations for those missing in the flood-affected areas.
Of the recovered bodies, 1,037 have been buried and otherwise managed, while the identification and management of the remaining bodies are underway. So far, 9,151 injured people have been rescued following the flood. Of those rescued, 3,098 have been accommodated at holding centres, according to police.
Similarly, DNA samples have been collected from 2,472 people, including 1,286 deceased persons and 1,186 relatives of the deceased. Spokesperson Kafle said DNA sample collection had been prioritised to help identify missing people and recovered bodies.
The Bhotekoshi flood has caused a huge loss of life. Security agencies, including the Nepal Police, and other concerned government agencies are continuing to mobilise personnel and resources to search for missing people, rescue those affected and identify and manage the recovered bodies.
