KATHMANDU: Former Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba is scheduled to return to Nepal from Hong Kong on August 11.
According to Nepali Congress leader Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat, Deuba is expected to arrive in Kathmandu on a flight scheduled to land at around 9:45 p.m.
Earlier, on July 21, Deuba announced that he would return to Nepal, saying he was coming back to uphold democracy, the Constitution and the national interest while paying tribute to the legacy of BP Koirala.
In his statement, Deuba called on political parties, civil society, the younger generation and the public to stand firmly in support of democracy, nationalism, socialism and constitutionalism.
His return comes amid heightened political developments within the Nepali Congress. On Thursday, the Supreme Court decided to review a case related to the party’s leadership, while a faction within the Congress has also announced plans to hold a national gathering.
Deuba has been in Hong Kong since traveling there after completing medical treatment in Singapore. He had initially planned to return to Nepal earlier but remained abroad.
According to the report, government agencies have initiated investigations involving Deuba in connection with corruption and money laundering allegations. The report further states that previous attempts to take legal action against him were challenged in court and that the government has indicated it would arrest him upon his return if legally permitted. These claims remain part of ongoing legal and political developments, and no final judicial determination has been made.
Deuba traveled to Singapore for medical treatment before proceeding to Hong Kong, where he has been staying with his wife, Dr. Arzu Deuba. It remains unclear whether she will return to Nepal with him.
