KATHMANDU: Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sobita Gautam has said that the government is preparing to prioritise essential legislation and table related bills in the Federal Parliament by the end of July.
Responding to queries raised by lawmakers during Monday’s discussion on the Appropriation Bill in the National Assembly, Minister Gautam said work is underway to identify a list of priority laws that require immediate enactment.
Lawmakers had raised concerns over the need to complete legal reforms within set timelines, accelerate the repeal and amendment of outdated laws, expand digital legal services, improve the management of government cases, and enhance the capacity of judges.
Minister Gautam said the government has given high priority to concluding the long-pending transitional justice process at the earliest possible time.
She informed that adequate budget has been allocated for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons, which are key institutions under the transitional justice framework.
Reaffirming the ministry’s commitment to effective implementation within limited budget resources, she said a clear plan has been prepared to prioritise and submit necessary laws to Parliament.
The minister also said that the government has established a separate fund and issued regulations for victim compensation.
She added that draft regulations for both the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Enforced Disappeared Persons Commission have already been prepared and submitted to the Cabinet for approval.
