NC internal rift deepens as dissidents say unity efforts hit dead end

KATHMANDU: The dissident faction within the Nepali Congress has formally launched its preparations for the party’s 15th General Convention by setting up a separate contact office in Kathmandu.

Party leaders from the non-establishment group inaugurated the office in Chundevi on Monday, marking the beginning of formal organisational work for the upcoming convention.

According to Congress leader Min Bishwakarma, a meeting of the party’s 14th General Convention-elected working committee was also held following the inauguration, where contemporary political issues and agenda for the upcoming convention were discussed.

During the meeting, former acting party president Purna Bahadur Khadka briefed participants on long-standing differences between the “special convention” and “regular convention” proposals, along with ongoing internal debates, Bishwakarma said.

The dissident group concluded that despite continuous efforts over the past five months by top leaders, former office bearers, and central committee members to prevent party division, no concrete outcome has been achieved due to the stance of the establishment faction.

Bishwakarma said leaders currently in the party leadership have failed to take meaningful initiatives for unity, and some of their public statements have further deepened internal divisions.

He added that another meeting of the 14th General Convention-elected working committee will be held on Tuesday to finalize the schedule for the 15th General Convention.

The meeting is also expected to decide on the observance of BP Memorial Day on August 6, he said.

The contact office, Bishwakarma added, has been established to help ensure the success of the 15th General Convention as a “unity convention.”
