Govt to probe assets of senior BPKIHS officials, form reform committee

KATHMANDU: The government has decided to form a committee to investigate the assets of long-serving senior officials at the B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) as part of efforts to strengthen governance and institutional reform.

The decision was made following a joint inspection of the institute on Sunday by Minister for Health and Food Safety Nisha Mehta and Home Minister Sudan Gurung.

Minister Mehta said the asset investigation committee would examine the wealth of senior officials to enhance healthcare delivery, administrative governance, and institutional accountability at the institute.

She added that a separate reform committee would also be established to accelerate the implementation of institutional improvement measures.

During the inspection, the ministers reviewed the institute’s healthcare services, academic environment, infrastructure development, administrative governance, and the protection of public assets.

Mehta said the Ministry had already allocated Rs 250 million for the procurement of an MRI machine, ending a 13-year delay, and confirmed that the procurement process is underway.

She also noted that the long-disputed Maternal and Child Health (MCH) building has now come into operation, adding that the government has placed comprehensive reform of the institute among its top priorities.

The ministers further directed the concerned authorities to develop a modern skills laboratory and an upgraded library for students, while initiating the process to bring the Nirvana Country Club, located within the hospital premises, back under the institute’s ownership.

Mehta and Gurung reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming BPKIHS into a transparent, accountable, and high-quality center for healthcare services and medical education, with governance reform and institutional transparency at the forefront.
