KATHMANDU: Shram Sanskriti Party Chief Whip Aren Rai has warned that any attempt to roll back the achievements secured under the Constitution in the name of constitutional amendment would be unacceptable.
Speaking at Monday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Rai cautioned against undermining democracy, federalism, and secularism or attempting to abolish the provincial system through the amendment process.
He said that if the Constitution is to be amended, the existing one-third (33 percent) representation guaranteed for women should instead be increased to 50 percent.
Rai also stressed that any constitutional amendment should further strengthen the rights of marginalized and oppressed communities.
Warning against any assault on democratic values, he said attacks on democracy could trigger another wave of public resistance against Singha Durbar.
According to Rai, the country has witnessed repeated uprisings since 1951 because people have not felt that the state apparatus based in Singha Durbar has worked in their best interests.
