Health Minister directs authorities to ensure smooth supply of essential medicines

KATHMANDU: Health Minister Nisha Mehta has instructed concerned authorities to address existing challenges in the supply and management of medicines, including essential drugs used in cancer treatment.

During an inspection visit to the Department of Drug Administration (DDA) on Friday, the minister directed officials to take immediate measures to resolve medicine shortages and improve distribution systems across the country.

She emphasized the need for on-site monitoring of pharmaceutical companies that have applied for permits to supply and distribute medicines, and urged the department to expedite approval processes where appropriate.

Minister Mehta also pledged full support for strengthening the regulatory capacity of the DDA, while asking the department’s management to submit detailed requirements related to human resources and institutional reform.

She further directed authorities to ensure proper testing and quality control of generic medicines distributed free of cost by the government, as well as those provided under the national health insurance scheme.

According to the department, Acting Director General Shiwani Khadgi briefed the minister on the current status of operations and ongoing challenges within the regulatory system.

Officials said the ministry is prioritizing reforms aimed at improving availability, affordability, and quality assurance of essential medicines nationwide.
