KATHMANDU: The government has stepped up efforts to curb the practice of former high-ranking officials drawing multiple and unlimited benefits from the state treasury.
The Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers has directed the Home Ministry to submit detailed records of vehicles currently being used by former top officials by the end of office hours on Wednesday.
The move follows a recent internal review that found some former officials using more vehicles than permitted by law or receiving duplicate benefits from multiple state agencies.
The directive seeks full details of facilities being availed by former Presidents, Vice Presidents, Prime Ministers, Chief Justices, Speakers, and National Assembly Chairs.
According to Prime Minister Balen Shah’s press and research advisor Deepa Dahal, the government has sought the details strictly to prevent misuse of state resources and ensure good governance.
She said the primary objective is to identify benefits taken beyond legal provisions and make the system more transparent.
The move comes amid long-standing criticism that former high-ranking officials have been using state resources in violation of established norms.
Based on the details provided by the Home Ministry, the government is preparing to recall vehicles from those found exceeding the allowed facilities and streamline the process moving forward.
