Dhawal Shumsher Rana, Durga Prasai to launch ‘Jaya Nepal Party’

KATHMANDU: Former Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) leader Dr. Dhawal Shamsher Rana and medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai are set to register a new political party, the Jaya Nepal Party, with the Election Commission on August 13.

The decision follows a series of discussions between the two leaders, who have agreed on the party’s name, flag and other organizational matters, according to sources involved in the initiative.

Young leader Sagun Lawati of Panchthar is also associated with the new political campaign.

Under the proposed party structure, Rana will serve as the party chair, while a new position of “Supreme Leader” has been created for Prasai.

Rana resigned from the RPP on May 4, giving up even his ordinary membership. He was joined by 183 leaders and cadres, including former RPP Vice Chair Mukund Shyam Giri and former minister Dilnath Giri.

Prasai, meanwhile, has been leading campaigns advocating for the restoration of Nepal as a Hindu state and the monarchy through his “Nation, Nationality, Religion and Culture Protection Campaign.”

The campaign has focused on issues including the economic slowdown, debt burdens faced by bank and microfinance borrowers, increasing youth migration for foreign employment and criticism of the current political system.

Prasai was previously associated with the then CPN (Maoist) before later joining the CPN-UML, where he served as deputy chief of the party’s economic department and became a central committee member.

He eventually left the UML after relations with party chair KP Sharma Oli deteriorated and later aligned himself with the royalist movement.

Prasai has remained a controversial political figure in recent years and has been arrested on multiple occasions over allegations related to his public statements and activities.
