MoFA highlights digital reforms, economic diplomacy

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has highlighted a series of achievements during the first 100 days of the present government, citing improvements in service delivery, consular assistance and economic diplomacy.

The ministry said it had focused on making its services simpler, more transparent, technology-friendly and citizen-centric, in line with the government’s agenda of promoting good governance and effective public service delivery.

Among the key initiatives, the ministry launched the ‘Mofa Mitra’ mobile application to provide consular and other services to Nepalis facing difficulties abroad. It also expanded the online consular and legal advisory services of the Department of Consular Services to all 77 districts and 537 local levels.

The Ministry said it helped resolve problems faced by around 2,000 Nepali nationals in Portugal after fake consular certification stamps were found on their police clearance certificates, which had delayed the issuance of temporary residence permits.

The issue was settled through diplomatic engagement involving Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba, Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai and their Portuguese counterparts.

According to the Ministry, 819 Nepalis who had fallen victim to online scam networks in Southeast Asia were rescued and repatriated in coordination with Nepali diplomatic missions and other government agencies.

It also said Nepal’s continued diplomatic efforts led to the release of 128 Nepali nationals detained in the United Arab Emirates through a pardon granted by the UAE government on April 20. Likewise, Saudi Arabia granted amnesty to 33 Nepali prisoners on June 16.

The ministry further said it facilitated the resumption of Nepali tea exports to India by resolving trade-related issues through dialogue with India’s Ministry of External Affairs and other concerned authorities.

Amid heightened tensions in West Asia, the ministry said it prioritised the safety of Nepali citizens in the region by forming a 24-hour emergency response team. A total of 1,047 Nepalis stranded in the conflict-affected region were safely repatriated, according to the statement.

The ministry said these initiatives were implemented under the government’s 100-day action plan aimed at strengthening governance, improving public services and enhancing Nepal’s diplomatic engagement.
