Health condition of rescued Everest guide Dawa Sherpa improves

KATHMANDU: The health condition of Dawa Sherpa (Hillary Dawa), who was found alive after going missing for a week at Everest, is gradually improving, according to HAMS Hospital.

In a press statement issued on Friday, the hospital said the 57-year-old was admitted in a critical condition with severe dehydration, second-degree frostbite in the little fingers of both hands, and first-degree frostbite in the thumb and middle finger of his right hand. He also sustained a fractured femoral condyle (a bone near the knee) in his right leg and developed a blood-related hematoma in the thigh.

The hospital stated that Sherpa is currently receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). His treatment includes intravenous iloprost therapy for frostbite management, oxygen support, saline infusion, and other necessary supportive care.

Doctors said his condition is now stable, with notable improvement in dehydration levels. A multidisciplinary team of specialists is continuously monitoring his health.

According to Dr. Jyotindra Sharma, executive director of the hospital, Sherpa will remain in the ICU for a few more days for further treatment and observation.

The hospital added that further updates on his condition will be shared as necessary.
