President calls for promoting environmental conservation and nature-friendly lifestyles

KATHMANDU: President Ram Chandra Paudel has called on all stakeholders to adopt nature-friendly lifestyles and actively promote environmental conservation initiatives.

In a message issued on the occasion of World Environment Day 2026, President Paudel said, “In line with the understanding that development and environmental protection are complementary to each other, I sincerely urge all concerned to embrace nature-oriented lifestyles and advance activities that contribute to environmental improvement.”

Extending his best wishes on the occasion, the President said a safe and green future for coming generations can be ensured through the use of clean energy, tree plantation, strengthening climate adaptation capacity, and conserving natural heritage.

He noted that climate change, pollution, and the excessive exploitation of natural resources have emerged as serious global challenges. “Climate change is no longer only a threat to the future; its impacts are already being felt today,” he said.

President Paudel expressed hope that World Environment Day would inspire greater solidarity and encourage the active participation of citizens and stakeholders in environmental protection, green development, and efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

“Nature and the environment are the foundation of human life. Protecting clean air, pure water, green forests, and biodiversity is our shared responsibility and right,” the President said in his message.

Referring to Nepal’s growing environmental challenges, he pointed to melting glaciers, irregular rainfall patterns, floods, landslides, and ecological imbalances as visible impacts of climate change. He expressed confidence that the occasion would encourage greater awareness, responsibility, and action toward environmental conservation.

Observed annually on June 5 at the call of the United Nations, World Environment Day is being celebrated this year under the theme, “The Basis for a Prosperous Future: Climate- and Nature-Friendly Development.”
