Traffic halted on BP Highway due to flood risk

KAVREPALANCHOWK: Authorities have suspended traffic along the BP Highway from Monday evening, citing increased risk caused by continuous rainfall and rising water levels in the Roshi River.

According to the District Police Office, Dhulikhel, the highway section from Chowkidanda in Katunje of Namobuddha Municipality in Kavrepalanchowk to Nepalthok in Sindhuli has been closed from 5 pm today as a precautionary measure.

Information Officer and Deputy Superintendent of Police Ravin Bisht said the decision was taken to prevent possible accidents amid flooding risks. He urged the public to check road conditions before travelling and to avoid using the route until further notice.

Continuous rainfall has caused the Roshi River to overflow repeatedly, affecting the Chowkidanda–Nepalthok stretch of the highway. In previous years, floods had washed away sections of the road, prompting the construction of temporary diversions.

Last year alone, around 18 km of road in the Chowkidanda, Roshi, and Nepalthok sections were damaged by flooding, after which traffic was rerouted through river-based diversions. Permanent reconstruction work is currently underway in the affected areas.

Following the closure, vehicles have been held at key points including Dhulikhel and Kavrebhanjyang in Kavrepalanchowk, as well as Nepalthok in Sindhuli, according to the Banepa District Traffic Office.
