Damauli gears up for provincial volleyball showdown

TANAHUN: Damauli is set to host the Gandaki Province Inter-District Volleyball Tournament on May 9 and 10, promising high-level competition and excitement for sports enthusiasts.

With some of the province’s top players competing on the same court, both the quality of play and spectator enthusiasm are expected to peak. Nawalpur’s Himal Sunari, Biswas Adhikari and Ashok Shrestha are preparing for strong performances, while Syangja’s lineup—featuring Rajan Darlami, Sanjok Pariyar, Umesh Century and Gandaki captain Sanju Bikram Shah—is also expected to intensify the contest.

Baglung’s Indra BK, Santosh BK and Kunjan Shahi are likely to add further competitiveness, while host Tanahun’s Bivash Ale aims to deliver an impressive performance on home ground.

According to Anil Pandey, President of the District Sports Development Committee Tanahun, participation from both men’s and women’s teams across all 11 districts of Gandaki Province will make the tournament more inclusive and competitive. He described the event as not just a competition, but a festival for sports lovers.

Pandey said preparations are underway to ensure the event is well-organised, safe and competitive, with special focus on upgrading the playground, managing spectators and ensuring player comfort.

“This tournament is not just about winning or losing; it is a platform to showcase players’ talent,” he said. “It will help young athletes from Gandaki Province advance to the national level.”

He added that the tournament aims to highlight talent from across the province, promote healthy competition and strengthen social unity through sports.

Despite growing interest in volleyball among youth, Pandey noted that opportunities for proper training and competitive exposure remain limited. “There are many talented players in rural areas, but they lack regular competitions and a supportive environment,” he said, adding that the tournament offers a valuable platform for them to prove their abilities.

Top performers from the event will be selected to form a strong Gandaki Province team for upcoming national competitions.
