Travel restriction on Oli lifted

KATHMANDU: The high-level probe commission formed to investigate incidents related to the Gen Z movement of September 8 and 9 has lifted the restrictions imposed on former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, including a ban on foreign travel and leaving the Kathmandu Valley.

In a statement issued on Monday, commission member and spokesperson Gyanraj Sharma said the restrictions were lifted as questioning of then Prime Minister Oli, who was under the scope of investigation, has been completed. With the investigation process concluded, the justification for continuing the restrictions no longer exists, the statement said.

Following the decision, Oli is now free to leave his residence in Gundu, Bhaktapur, and travel to other parts of the country. The move also clears the way for him to participate in party campaigns and political programs outside the Kathmandu Valley.

The lifting of the order has also opened the door for Oli to undertake foreign visits. Oli had earlier maintained that remaining under movement restrictions would prevent him from participating in the upcoming Falgun 21 election.

The commission had recorded Oli’s statement at his residence in Gundu after he submitted a written statement. Upon completion of the statement-taking process, the location-based restriction was formally lifted.

The commission also said that investigations involving all other leaders and officials who had been kept under similar restrictions have now been concluded.
