KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress Vice President Bishwo Prakash Sharma has said the ongoing 15th General Convention marks the beginning of a new journey for the party, claiming that the Congress will emerge stronger and more energetic after the convention while reflecting the aspirations of the new generation.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the General Convention at Khula Manch in Kathmandu, Sharma said the Nepali Congress, established under the leadership of BP Koirala and carrying an 80-year history, has played a leading role in the country’s democratic movements and during various national crises.
Sharma said the Congress is currently the main opposition party following the formation of a majority government led by the Rastriya Swatantra Party. He said the Congress is ready to work with the government on issues of national interest and development.
“All political parties should stand together on important issues concerning national interest and work to make the country successful,” he said.
Sharma also stressed the need to seriously address the impacts of climate change, the Madhes movement and the demands raised by the Gen Z generation. He said issues concerning citizenship and investment of Nepalis living abroad should also be resolved.
“There are two Nepals: Nepal outside the country and Nepal within the country. We must connect these two Nepals,” Sharma said. “The Congress is ready to address investment by Nepalis living abroad and the issue of citizenship envisioned by the Constitution.”
Referring to the Congress entering a new phase under the leadership of Gagan Kumar Thapa following the special convention, Sharma said the participation of senior leaders, families of martyrs and a large number of young representatives had added new energy to the party.
