Govt showing signs of authoritarianism: UML Chief Whip Mahar

CPN-UML Parliamentary Party Chief Whip Ain Mahar has accused the government of exhibiting authoritarian tendencies, saying it is acting as if it is above the constitution, laws, and established democratic norms. Speaking during an interaction with journalists at the UML parliamentary party office in Singha Durbar on Thursday, Chief Whip Mahar said the government appears to be disregarding constitutional provisions and legal frameworks. He also raised questions over the role of the Speaker, alleging that the parliamentary proceedings are being conducted in a manner that makes the legislature appear like a shadow of the executive.

Tulsa Adhikari sent to judicial custody in money laundering case

Social media personality popularly known as “Tulsa Collection” Tulsa Adhikari has been sent to jail for judicial custody. The Lalitpur District Court on Thursday ordered that Adhikari be remanded in custody for trial proceedings. The order was issued by a bench of Judge Tek Nath Gautam during the hearing of a money laundering (asset concealment) case filed by the District Government Attorney’s Office against Adhikari and nine others. The case was registered following a complaint lodged by Kumar Chimariya. Along with TikToker Adhikari, Ashok Kumar Agrawal is also among the 10 defendants in the case.

Over Rs 104.6 million recovered from TU professors who failed to return after study leave: Minister Pokharel

Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel has said that the government’s campaign to protect public resources, strengthen good governance, and enforce institutional discipline in higher education has made notable progress. According to Minister Pokharel, more than Rs 104.6 million has been recovered from professors of Tribhuvan University (TU) who failed to return to service after taking study leave. He said the recovery process has accelerated following the initiative of the ministry and active efforts from the university. As per TU records, 41 professors have already returned the money. A total of Rs 104,656,804 has been recovered so far from them.

End discrimination through change in mindset and behavior, not just laws: PM Shah

Prime Minister Balen Shah has said that building an aware and responsible society against discrimination is a shared responsibility of all, emphasizing equality, respect, and human dignity. Issuing a message on the occasion of the National Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and Untouchability on Thursday, PM Shah said these values must be translated into practice through collective effort. Recalling that the then House of Representatives had declared Nepal a caste-based untouchability-free nation on June 4, 2006, two decades ago, he noted that the day is observed in remembrance of that historic commitment to equality, dignity, and social justice.

Squatter man dies during treatment at holding centre in Kathmandu

A man who had been staying at a holding centre in Kirtipur after being displaced from a squatter settlement has died during treatment at Bir Hospital. According to family members, Bhesh Bahadur Darji, who had been moved to the holding centre following the removal of a squatter settlement, died on Thursday while undergoing treatment. He was taken to the hospital after his health condition deteriorated. Doctors diagnosed fluid accumulation in his lungs during medical examinations. The family said Darji had been suffering from a chronic lung-related illness for a long time, and his condition worsened recently, leading to hospitalization.

Gen-Z civic campaign alleges political intimidation inside police custody

The National Gen-Z Citizen Campaign has accused police of mistreatment of its activists and alleged political interference after demonstrators were taken into custody near the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu. In a statement issued on Monday, the campaign said its members had gone to distribute pamphlets peacefully, expressing views that Limpiyadhura, Kalapani and Lipulekh are integral parts of Nepal. During the demonstration, police reportedly detained activists including Ajay Sodari, Prakash Bam, Sujan Paudel and Stul James Nepali and kept them at the Kathmandu Police Circle, Lainchaur. The group alleged that around an hour after their detention, former Home Minister and MP Sudan Gurung entered the detention area along with a group and verbally intimidated the activists.

Nepali Congress suspends Bara district president over alleged election misconduct

The Central Disciplinary Committee of the Nepali Congress has suspended Bara District Working Committee President Rajesh Rai Yadav over allegations of violating party discipline during the parliamentary elections. A meeting of the committee held on Thursday at the party’s central office, BP Smriti Bhawan in Lalitpur, decided to suspend Yadav from performing his duties as district president until a final decision is reached. According to the committee, Yadav failed to submit an explanation within the stipulated timeframe despite being asked twice to clarify allegations that he worked against the party’s official candidate in the House of Representatives election held on March 5, 2026 (Falgun 21, 2082).

Dhawal Shumsher Rana announces formation of new political party after quitting RPP

Dhawal Shumsher Rana has announced plans to form a new political party following his departure from the Rastriya Prajatantra Party. Speaking at a program in Kathmandu on Thursday, Rana said preparations were underway to launch a new political force. Earlier this week, Rana had formally announced his resignation from the RPP, citing dissatisfaction with the party’s current direction and leadership. Several RPP leaders and cadres have also left the party and joined the new political campaign initiated by Rana, according to organizers.

New nationalist political force to be formed with focus on youth and women representation: Rana

A new political initiative is set to be launched with the formation of a political party aimed at building a credible nationalist force in line with public sentiment and changing times, according to its promoters. Speaking on the development, Rana said the move has been initiated after widespread consultations at home and abroad, where suggestions were received that there is a vacuum of a trustworthy nationalist political force in the country. He said the initiative has been taken by embracing public goodwill and expectations. He added that over the past four years, party establishment leadership has repeatedly sidelined, disciplined, and politically pressured leaders and cadres in ways that have hurt their self-respect, while also forcing them to remain engaged in defensive politics against internal injustices.

Nepal thrash Malaysia by 167 runs in Asian Games qualifying match

Nepal has registered a commanding 167-run victory over Malaysia in the Asian Games qualifying cricket match on Thursday. In the match, Nepal national cricket team posted a massive total of 275 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in the allotted 20 overs after Malaysia opted to field first upon winning the toss. For Nepal, Kushal Bhurtel starred with a brilliant 126 runs off 54 balls, hitting 14 fours and 8 sixes. Aasif Sheikh contributed 68 runs off 24 balls, while captain Dipendra Singh Airee added a quickfire 31 runs off just 11 balls.

Kushal Bhurtel smashes back-to-back T20I centuries, creates Nepal cricket history

Nepal opening batter Kushal Bhurtel has etched his name into the record books by scoring consecutive T20 International centuries, becoming the first Nepali player to achieve the feat. During Nepal’s Asian Games qualification match against Malaysia national cricket team on Thursday, Bhurtel reached his century in just 44 deliveries. It was the third T20I century of his international career. The milestone comes just days after his explosive knock against China national cricket team, where he blasted a century off only 35 balls before being dismissed for 129 runs from 43 deliveries.

183 leaders quit RPP, citing leadership failure and weakening of party ideals

Internal dissatisfaction within the Rastriya Prajatantra Party has come to the fore after 183 leaders and cadres, including central committee members, office-bearers of affiliated organizations, and representatives from various party structures, jointly announced their resignation from the party. In a declaration issued on Wednesday, the signatories stated that they remain firmly committed to the party’s core ideology, including constitutional monarchy and the parliamentary system, as well as the founding objectives of the RPP. However, they accused the party leadership of weakening the organization’s ideological foundation, undermining the spirit of the unity convention, and eroding democratic practices within the party.

Construction of Gautam Buddha Cricket Stadium resumes after budget release

Construction work on the Gautam Buddha Cricket Stadium has resumed after a month-long suspension caused by delays in payment to the contractor. The construction company had halted work, citing non-payment due to delays in the release of funds from the Bagmati Provincial Government. According to Bharatpur Metropolitan City engineer Adarsha Pokharel, construction resumed after the provincial government released Rs 90 million for the project.

Missing mountain guide rescued alive after a week near Everest Base Camp

Mountain guide Dawa Sherpa (Hilary), who had been missing for a week on Mount Everest, has been rescued alive and airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment. Sherpa was found in the Khumbu Icefall region and provided initial medical care before being transported by helicopter to HAMS Hospital in Kathmandu. According to rescuers, he was discovered with injuries and cold-related effects on his hands and feet after spending several days in the harsh high-altitude environment.

Man arrested for allegedly killing wife in Bhaktapur

A man has been arrested on the charge of killing his wife following a domestic dispute in Bhaktapur. According to the District Police Range, Bhaktapur, the incident took place on Thursday night at a rented house in Chhaling, Bhaktapur Municipality-10. Police spokesperson Deputy Superintendent of Police Prakash Jabegu said that 33-year-old Salina Bishwakarma was allegedly attacked with a khukuri by her husband, Bidur Bishwakarma, a resident of Shankharapur Municipality-6, Nanglebhare, Kathmandu.

APF seizes 774 electric vehicles over suspected customs evasion

The Armed Police Force (APF) has taken control of 774 electric vehicles that entered Nepal through the Korala border point in Mustang on suspicion of customs evasion. According to APF spokesperson Bishnu Prasad Bhatta, the vehicles were seized overnight from Jomsom in Mustang, Kusma in Parbat, and Hemja in Kaski. Security personnel from APF No. 33 Gulma in Mustang, Myagdi Gulma, No. 25 Chandika Battalion in Parbat, and No. 24 Kalika Battalion in Kaski were mobilized for the operation.

3 killed in jeep accident in Rolpa

Three people were killed in a jeep accident in Madi, Rolpa, on Thursday morning. The accident occurred at Byangkhola in Gharti village of Madi Rural Municipality-2 at around 8 am. According to Rolpa Police Inspector Krishna Shrestha, the jeep plunged about 600 meters off the road, killing three occupants on the spot.

Kathmandu Metropolitan monitors spas, massage centers in Thamel

Kathmandu Metropolitan City has conducted inspections of massage centers and spas operating in the Thamel area as part of efforts to curb child sexual exploitation and labor abuse. The monitoring was carried out on Wednesday by the Human Trafficking and Transportation Control Committee of Ward No. 26 in coordination with Anahat Nepal, Nepal Police, and the Metropolitan Police. According to committee coordinator Shanta Prajapati, the inspection found several spas and massage centers operating without registration and others running in violation of the prescribed code of conduct.

Fire damages school building in Bhaktapur, causes estimated loss of Rs 5 million

A fire at Khwopring English Secondary School in Libali, Bhaktapur Municipality, has caused significant damage to the school infrastructure. According to Principal Binod Prajapati, the blaze completely damaged two floors of the school building and destroyed five classrooms. The fire is estimated to have caused losses worth around Rs 5 million.

Foreign Minister Khanal set to visit India after Rabi’s return

Foreign Minister Sishir Khanal is scheduled to visit India soon after the return of Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chair Rabi Lamichhane from his ongoing visit. Khanal is set to travel to India on June 6–7 at the official invitation of Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. The visit has been scheduled while Lamichhane is still in India for political engagements. Deepak Bohara, a member of the RSP secretariat who is part of Lamichhane’s delegation, said that discussions during the Foreign Minister’s visit are expected to include a “checklist” of bilateral issues of mutual interest.

2 killed, 6 injured in tractor accident in Changunarayan

Two people were killed and six others injured in a tractor accident in Changunarayan Municipality-8, Kalamsi of Bhaktapur. According to police, the accident took place last night when a tractor carrying labourers returning to their lodging after completing road slope work met with an accident. District Police Complex Bhaktapur spokesperson DSP Surya Khadka said six others were injured in the incident. Both deceased are male and have yet to be identified. Police said there were 12 people on board the tractor at the time of the accident. The vehicle reportedly met with the accident due to brake failure.
