KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has developed its own integrated attendance system for teachers, staff, and students of community schools, aiming to streamline daily attendance tracking. The system was created collaboratively by the Education Department and the Information Technology Department, linking all community schools into a single digital platform.
All schools have already been provided with usernames and passwords. For schools including Jankalyan, Tangal, Geetamata, Gyanodaya, Tarun, Ratnarajya, Padmodaya, Janpath, and Bishwo Niketan, the names of teachers and staff have been entered into the system, and face recognition registration has been completed. Students’ data entry and face recognition processes are ongoing, according to Keshav Prasad Gyawali, acting chief of the Education Department.
The system was developed largely using internal manpower from KMC, reducing dependency on external developers. After the system rollout, training has been provided to school administrative and accounting staff on how to operate the attendance system. The training includes data entry, updates, and report generation, which will now be handled directly by the schools.
The new system also allows real-time monitoring from KMC’s central platform. Anirudra Nepal, head of the IT Department, said, “Developing our own system is a major achievement. We no longer have to rely on external consultants for services.”
Once data is entered, it will be linked to the Sub-National Treasury Regulatory Application (SUTRA). According to IT officer Madhav Khanal, the system will include personal profiles, enabling students to view their own information. KMC also plans to send notifications to guardians when students are absent, further improving attendance monitoring and accountability.
