KATHMANDU: A meeting of the Constitutional Council is taking place today under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Balendra Shah.
The meeting, which will begin at 5:00 pm at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, is expected to discuss recommendations for appointments to several vacant positions in constitutional bodies, according to Nepali Congress leader Bhishma Raj Angdembe.
Currently, two positions, including the chairperson, are vacant in the Election Commission. Other vacancies include one member of the National Human Rights Commission; two positions, including the chairperson, in the Muslim Commission; two positions, including the chairperson, in the National Inclusive Commission; and one member of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority.
Similarly, two positions, including the chairperson, are vacant in the Tharu Commission, while the Madhesi Commission also has two vacancies, including the chairperson. The National Natural Resources and Fiscal Commission has three vacant positions, including the chairperson, and one member’s position is vacant in the National Women Commission.
Under the Constitution, the Constitutional Council is responsible for recommending candidates for these positions, who must subsequently undergo parliamentary hearings before appointment.
