Melamchi water supply suspended after source turns muddy

KATHMANDU: Water supply from the Melamchi Drinking Water Project to the Kathmandu Valley has been temporarily suspended from today after heavy rainfall caused high turbidity at the project’s source.

According to Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL) spokesperson Bir Bahadur Chand, water flowing from Melamchi to the Sundarijal-based treatment plant has been halted because excessive turbidity has made the treatment process difficult.

“The water at the source has become extremely muddy due to rainfall. Once the water quality improves, treatment will resume and supply will be restored according to the regular distribution schedule,” Chand said.

He added that if rainfall continues, it may take longer for water supply to resume across the Kathmandu Valley.
