CHITWAN: A total of 137 gharials raised at the Gharial Breeding Centre of Chitwan National Park have been released into their natural habitat in the Rapti River during the current fiscal year.
According to Chitwan National Park Information Officer Abinash Thapa, 20 gharials were released on Monday, bringing the total number released into the Rapti River this fiscal year to 137.
“All the gharials released so far are female,” Thapa said, adding that the releases are part of the park’s ongoing conservation efforts to restore gharial populations in natural river systems.
Thapa informed that a total of 2,207 gharials reared at the breeding centre have been released into rivers to date. Currently, 630 gharials remain at the breeding centre.
