CARACAS: Multiple explosions have been reported in the capital of Venezuela, Caracas early Saturday, according to a report published by CNN.
The first explosion occurred at around 1:50 am local time. CNN correspondent Osmary Hernández said one of the blasts was so powerful that it shook her windows.
Following the explosions, power outages were reported in parts of the city, and plumes of smoke were seen rising near La Carlota airport. Videos circulating online showed two columns of smoke in the night sky, one of them glowing orange at its base.
Local media also reported hearing explosions in other parts of the country, including La Guaira state and the city of Higuerote in Miranda state.
The incident comes amid rising tensions between the United States and Venezuela. US President Donald Trump had earlier warned of new actions against drug trafficking networks in Venezuela and stated that a ground operation would begin soon, shortly before the explosions were reported.
