KATHMANDU: Monsoon conditions are expected to remain active across Nepal on Sunday, with heavy rainfall likely at isolated places in the hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Karnali provinces, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.
The Department’s Weather Forecasting Division said the monsoon trough is currently positioned near its average location in the western region and slightly north of its normal position in the east. Partial cloud cover has been reported over the Terai of Sudurpashchim Province, while the rest of the country is experiencing partly to generally cloudy conditions. Light to moderate rainfall is already occurring at some places in Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Karnali provinces.
During the day, the country is expected to remain generally to fully cloudy. Light to moderate rainfall is forecast for many hilly areas and some parts of the Terai, while parts of the Himalayan region may receive moderate rain or snowfall. Isolated heavy rainfall is also likely in the hilly districts of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Karnali provinces.
Similar weather conditions are expected tonight, with light to moderate rainfall likely in many parts of the country. Moderate rain or snowfall is forecast for some Himalayan areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, as well as isolated locations in the Himalayan districts of Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpashchim.
The Division has also forecast moderate rainfall across much of the Terai in Madhesh Province and in the Terai regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, with some areas of Sudurpashchim’s Terai also likely to receive rain. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is possible at isolated locations in the Himalayan, hilly and Terai regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, as well as parts of Madhesh Province and the Terai of Lumbini.
The department has urged the public in vulnerable areas to remain alert to the risks of flash floods, landslides, debris flows and soil erosion. It also warned that adverse weather could disrupt daily life, agriculture, health services, tourism, mountaineering, and road and air transportation, advising people to stay updated with the latest weather bulletins.
