KATHMANDU: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Dr. Bikram Timilsina, has said the government is focused on establishing a safe, credible, inclusive and sustainable digital ecosystem.
Issuing a message of best wishes on the occasion of National Information and Communications Technology Day, 2083, today, Minister Timilsina said information technology is not an alternative but a fundamental pillar for good governance, service delivery, economic development, entrepreneurship and citizen empowerment.
He extended his best wishes to all those actively working in the IT sector—innovators, entrepreneurs, private entities, researchers, students, the start-up community and other stakeholders.
The government is advancing its initiatives and policies to build a Digital Nepal by making public services convenient, transparent, accountable and citizen-friendly.
“The Ministry of Communications has given high priority to the development of digital public infrastructure, along with a long-term IT vision for the coming decade. The Nagarik App will be made more robust and effective by integrating numerous state services, making service delivery more convenient,” he added.
He also shared the Ministry’s plan to accelerate necessary policies and programmes to secure Nepal’s position in the region as a hub for digital innovation, IT services, the data economy and artificial intelligence (AI).
To achieve this, legal and structural mechanisms will be put in place, alongside the National AI Policy and the National Cyber Security Strategy.
The expansion of high-speed broadband internet, strengthening of government data centres, disaster recovery systems, digital literacy, and the development of a competent and technologically skilled workforce are being prioritized to reduce the digital divide and ensure digital inclusion.
The government is committed to creating employment opportunities in IT, engaging young talent, and fostering start-up development as a driver of the national economy, the Minister explained.
Minister Timilsina also said, “Digital transformation is not possible through the government’s efforts alone. It requires the active participation of the private sector, academia, development partners, media, the tech community and the general public.”
