US plans 5,000 troop cut in Germany amid tensions between Trump and Merz

WASHINGTON DC: The US Department of Defense is preparing to withdraw around 5,000 troops from Germany, a move that comes amid escalating tensions between US President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the Iran conflict.

The announcement follows sharp criticism from Trump after Merz suggested that the United States had been “humiliated” in its dealings with Iran. Trump responded on social media, accusing Merz of poor leadership and highlighting issues in Germany related to immigration and energy, BBC has reported.

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said the decision was ordered by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth after a comprehensive review of US military positioning in Europe. He noted that the withdrawal reflects current operational needs and conditions, and is expected to be completed within six to twelve months.

The US maintains a major military presence in Germany, with over 36,000 active-duty personnel stationed there as of late last year.

Trump, who has long criticized NATO allies, has also expressed frustration over what he sees as a lack of support from European countries in efforts related to the Strait of Hormuz.

He has indicated that troop reductions could extend to other allies, including Italy and Spain, criticizing both countries for their reluctance to engage in the Iran situation.

Merz, speaking earlier this week, questioned the clarity of US strategy and suggested Washington lacked a clear exit plan. He also remarked that Iran had outmaneuvered US negotiators, adding that the situation had embarrassed the United States.

In response, Trump rejected Merz’s remarks, accusing him of misunderstanding the issue and defending Iran. He also criticized Germany’s broader economic and political performance.

The US military presence in Germany remains its largest in Europe, compared to about 12,000 troops in Italy and roughly 10,000 in the United Kingdom.
