RSP parliamentary party meeting underway after House session

KATHMANDU: A meeting of the parliamentary party of the Rastriya Swatantra Party began at Singha Durbar on Thursday immediately after the House session concluded.

The meeting is expected to finalize key parliamentary positions including Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nepal, as well as the parliamentary party leader, deputy leader, chief whip and whip.

The party has proposed Dol Prasad Aryal, the party’s vice-chair, for the position of Speaker. Likewise, the name of Kabindra Burlakoti has been proposed for the post of chief whip.

However, no leader has yet publicly expressed interest in the posts of deputy parliamentary party leader or whip.

The House of Representatives is preparing to elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker on April 5.

If the Speaker’s post goes to the Rastriya Swatantra Party, the Deputy Speaker will be allocated to the opposition, according to parliamentary arrangements.

In that case, the position could go to one of the opposition parties including the Nepali Congress, the Nepal Communist Party, or the Shram Sanskriti Party.

Party leaders said the meeting will also hold preliminary discussions on how its lawmakers should present themselves in parliament in the coming days.
