KATHMANDU: The Election Commission Nepal has said that political parties will not be allowed to carry out election campaigning from 12:00 midnight tonight for the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5.
According to Assistant Spokesperson Kul Bahadur GC, the election silence period begins 48 hours prior to the voting day and remains in effect until polling concludes and voting centers are closed. As a result, parties and candidates will be barred from seeking votes after midnight tonight.
The Election Code of Conduct, 2026, outlines specific rules that candidates, political parties and related individuals must follow during the silence period.
Political parties have been conducting election campaigns since February 16. The campaign period will continue until midnight tonight. The silence period is considered essential to allow voters to make independent decisions based on their conscience and to promote fair competition.
As today marks the final day of campaigning and coincides with the Holi festival in the Himalayan and hilly districts, parties and candidates have continued their outreach efforts alongside the celebrations.
Once the silence period begins, no form of vote solicitation will be permitted. Political advertisements, campaign activities on social media, and dissemination of election-related messages will be prohibited.
The Commission has also directed that all campaign materials placed within 300 meters of polling stations must be removed by midnight tonight, 48 hours before voting begins.
Similarly, posting or sharing any message, information or promotional material supporting or opposing any political party or candidate through social media, online platforms, print or electronic media will be banned during the silence period.
The Code of Conduct also states that no individual may obstruct voters or personnel involved in polling activities from three hours before voting begins until the completion of voting.
Assistant Spokesperson GC said that sincere compliance with the Code of Conduct would help ensure informed voters and uphold the integrity of the election. The Commission stated that preparations necessary for conducting, supervising, directing and managing the election, as mandated by the Constitution, have reached the final stage.
