No agreement on uranium exploration in Mustang: Foreign Minister Khanal

KATHMANDU: Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal has clarified that Nepal has not signed any agreement with anyone to explore uranium in Mustang, dismissing recent rumours as baseless.

Responding to questions from lawmakers in Wednesday’s National Assembly session, Minister Khanal said there was no truth to claims that the Nepali Army and the US Army had entered into an agreement for uranium exploration in Mustang district.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to constitutional provisions regarding natural resources and their utilization.

The minister also reiterated that Nepal will not enter into any agreements that contradict its non-aligned foreign policy and the principles of Panchsheel.

On Nepal–India relations, he said the government remains committed to resolving border-related issues through diplomatic dialogue, in line with historical treaties, agreements, and maps, while respecting the spirit of close bilateral ties.

Minister Khanal further said the current government is focused on protecting national interests and enhancing the country’s image, while prioritizing foreign policy and international relations.

He added that foreign relations are a sensitive matter and require collective responsibility, contribution, and understanding from all stakeholders.
