KATHMANDU: The Federation Of Truck Transport Entrepreneurs Nepal has welcomed the government’s decision to reduce petroleum product prices and urged authorities to immediately adjust public transport fares in line with the automatic fare revision system.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Federation Chair Saroj Sitoula said public transport fares should be adjusted in a transparent, scientific, and objective manner in line with fluctuations in fuel prices.
The federation said that while fare hikes are implemented when fuel prices increase, delays in adjusting fares after price reductions create uncertainty for both passengers and transport operators.
It stressed that fare determination should not be based solely on fuel prices, but should also consider operational costs, maintenance expenses, insurance, workers’ wages, spare parts prices, banking costs, and overall economic indicators.
The federation said a sustainable, well-managed, and reliable transport system requires trust and coordination among the government, regulatory bodies, transport operators, and consumers.
It urged the government and concerned agencies to implement a clear, formula-based fare adjustment mechanism that responds to changing conditions, saying such a system would benefit passengers, ensure business sustainability, and support balanced development of the public transport sector.
