KATHMANDU: Opposition parties represented in Parliament held a meeting on Monday at the Nepali Congress parliamentary party office in Singha Durbar, with the Shram Sanskriti Party joining the opposition alliance for the first time.
The meeting, convened by Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party Leader Bishmaraj Aangdembe, was attended by Shram Sanskriti Party lawmakers Arun Rai and Dhruvaraj Rai, marking the party’s entry into the broader opposition front.
According to participants, the meeting focused on the political situation that emerged after Prime Minister Balen Shah’s controversial remarks in the House of Representatives on Sunday, where he allegedly said Nepal had also encroached on Indian territory.
Leaders said the opposition parties are seeking a unified stance following what they described as statements contrary to national interest. Until now, the Shram Sanskriti Party had not been part of the opposition coordination meetings.
The meeting also comes amid growing friction between ruling and opposition parties over recent government decisions, including the use of ordinances and contentious parliamentary proceedings.
Opposition leaders present included Nepali Congress Chief Whip Bhasana Thapa, UML parliamentary leader Ram Bahadur Thapa, UML Deputy Leader Padma Aryal, and Rastriya Prajatantra Party lawmaker Khushbu Oli among others.
Leaders said the opposition unity has strengthened following recent developments in Parliament, with parties aligning more closely on issues related to governance, parliamentary conduct, and national sensitivity matters.
