Elderly man found dead in Balkhu amid ongoing eviction drive

KATHMANDU: An elderly man was found dead in the Balkhu area on Friday, where authorities are continuing an eviction and demolition campaign targeting structures built on alleged public land encroachment.

The eviction drive has been carried out under the PM Balen Shah-led government, with joint security deployment from Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and Kathmandu Metropolitan Police.

Authorities have been removing squatter structures using excavators after issuing notices to vacate, leaving several families displaced and collecting their belongings in haste, according to residents.

In the same area, a 61-year-old man, identified as Indra Bahadur Rai, was found dead near Balkhu Khola on Friday afternoon. Police said his body was discovered by locals and later confirmed by authorities.

Rai, originally from Khotang, had been working in the Balkhu fruit and vegetable market for several years, according to family members.

Police have stated that further investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.
