Failure to debate national plans among PM contenders unfortunate: Thapa

KATHMANDU: President of the Nepali Congress, Gagan Kumar Thapa, has said it is unfortunate that those declaring themselves prime ministerial candidates have failed to engage in substantive debate on plans to build the nation.

Addressing a party election rally in Kirtipur, Kathmandu, on Sunday, Thapa said he had expected serious debate and competition over agendas and a five-year roadmap after candidates announced their bid for prime minister. However, such discussion has not taken place.

He said he had hoped that just as he envisions a dream for the country from the hills of Kirtipur, others would also present their own vision during this election, but that expectation has not been met.

Stating that the current election is being held under special circumstances, Thapa urged leaders not to use provocative language, saying Nepal must not lose regardless of who wins or loses.

He also said that at the very least, parents of those who lost their lives during the “Gen-Z movement” should be assured that the country is moving toward good governance.

Thapa further said that the first government led by the Nepali Congress would form a powerful commission to investigate corruption in order to establish good governance.

Referring to ongoing discussions on social media, he said he does not consider the trends unusual, noting that globally social media platforms often amplify voices that use the language of hatred.
