Nepal simplifies visit visa travel requirements for citizens

KATHMANDU: The Department of Immigration has scrapped the previous checklist for Nepali citizens traveling abroad on a visit visa and introduced a new, simplified procedure.

According to a ministerial decision by the Ministry of Home Affairs on July 29, Nepali citizens now need to present only four documents to travel on a visit visa.

The department urged citizens to travel confidently without relying on intermediaries.

Under the new rules, travelers must carry:

  1. A passport valid for at least six months,
  2. The relevant visa (or proof for countries offering on-arrival visas),
  3. A confirmed ticket to the destination, and
  4. A self-declaration stating the purpose of the visit.

The department said the change was made by amending Section 3.1 (2)(b) of the Immigration Procedures, 2065. While the previous checklist aimed to streamline visit visa travel, it often caused unnecessary complications and irregularities.

“The new system aims to eliminate inconvenience and irregularities, making travel on a visit visa citizen-friendly and transparent,” the department said.

The department added that maintaining a balance between facilitation and regulation, addressing national security concerns, and ensuring good governance in immigration administration remain top priorities. Local bodies and district administration offices have been requested to disseminate the information to all citizens.
