PM Oli hails NC-UML coalition as solution to political instability
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has stated that the alliance between the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML has freed the country from the “drama” of repeatedly seeking trust votes.
Speaking at the House of Representatives on Friday, PM Oli emphasized that the two major parties have united to address the nation’s issues and prioritize the needs of the people.
“I would like to highlight a positive change that we haven’t seen in our parliamentary politics over the past six months. The odd situation of undermining the stability of the government and playing political games at the expense of the country and its people has now been resolved,” he said.
PM Oli justifies issuance of Ordinances, highlights reforms
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has presented a seven-point “clarification” regarding the ordinances issued in the absence of the Parliament.
Amid criticisms that the government is attempting to bypass Parliament and rule through ordinances, Prime Minister Oli defended the ordinances during the parliamentary session itself.
Following a recommendation from the government, President Ram Chandra Poudel adjourned the budget session of Parliament on Bhadra 13.
NC President Deuba pledges broader political consensus to amend Constitution
Sher Bahadur Deuba, President of the Nepali Congress (NC), has pledged that the Constitution will be amended through consensus among all political parties.
Speaking at the opening of the fifth session of the House of Representatives (HoR) today, Deuba committed to prioritizing the amendment process by reviewing both the “positive” and “negative” aspects of the Constitution.
“The federal democratic republic system, along with pluralism based on multi-party competition and inclusion, should remain intact during any constitutional amendments,” he emphasized.
Nepal Oil Corporation raises petroleum prices
The Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has significantly increased the prices of petroleum products.
The Corporation raised the prices of petrol, diesel, kerosene, and aviation fuel, effective from midnight on Friday.
As a result, the price of petrol has increased by Rs 2 per liter, while the price of diesel and kerosene has risen by Rs 4.
RSP boycotts Parliament after Speaker resumes session
Members of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) have boycotted Friday’s House of Representatives session.
The boycott occurred after Speaker Devraj Ghimire resumed the meeting amidst ongoing disruptions.
The RSP lawmakers have since left the meeting hall. They stated that they had disrupted the session for 15 minutes before deciding to walk out.
RPP Chair Lingden calls for effective measures to control corruption
Rajendra Lingden, Chairperson of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) and a parliamentarian, called for effective measures to combat corruption.
Speaking on behalf of his party during today’s House of Representatives meeting, Lingden criticized the coalition government of the Nepali Congress and CPN (UML), claiming it had failed to meet the expectations of the people.
12 teams competing for Aaha Rara Gold Cup title
The 24th edition of the Aaha Rara Gold Cup, one of Nepal’s largest regional football tournaments, will be held in Pokhara from February 4 to 15.
Hosted by Sahara Club Pokhara, the tournament will feature 12 teams – nine from Nepal and three international teams, as announced by the club’s chair, Keshab Raj Baral.
The opening match on February 4 will see the host Sahara Club face off against Nepal Police Club, a departmental team.
US dollar exchange rate increases
The exchange rates of most foreign currencies, including the US dollar, Australian dollar, Kuwaiti and Bahraini dinars, and British pounds, increased on Friday.
However, the exchange rate of certain currencies, such as the euro, has fallen. The euro’s value has been gradually decreasing over the past four days.
According to the exchange rates published by Nepal Rastra Bank, the buying rate of one US dollar today is NPR 138.31, and the selling rate is NPR 138.91.
Yesterday, the buying rate for one US dollar was NPR 138.17, and the selling rate was NPR 138.77.
Gold price surges by Rs 2,300 per tola today
The prices of gold and silver increased today. According to the Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers Federation, the price of gold increased by Rs 2,300 per tola, reaching Rs 162,800 per tola.
Earlier this week, the price of gold had increased by Rs 1,400 per tola on Wednesday, but dropped by Rs 100 per tola yesterday (Thursday), settling at Rs 160,500 per tola.
Today’s 2,300 rupee increase marks a significant rise in a single day.
The price of silver has also risen by 30 rupees per tola, now standing at 1,915 rupees per tola.
Six ordinances tabled at HoR
Six ordinances have been tabled in the parliament on Friday.
On behalf of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, tabled the ‘Ordinance designed to amend some Nepal Acts on Promotion of Good Governance and Public Service Delivery, 2081’ during the meeting of the House of Representatives.
