KATHMANDU: The Nepal Bar Association (NBA), the umbrella organization for legal professionals across the country, is scheduled to hold its leadership election on April 5.
The decision was made during the working committee meeting of the NBA, as confirmed by Chairman Gopal Krishna Ghimire.
According to Ghimire, the meeting also formed a 5-member election committee, chaired by senior advocate Ram Krishna Nirala.
Legal professionals from across the country will elect the 27th working committee through direct voting. The new working committee will consist of 25 members.
The main contenders for leadership are organizations affiliated with the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML.
Since these two parties are in an alliance in the current government, it remains unclear how this will affect the NBA’s leadership dynamics.
Recently, the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML-affiliated organizations clashed in the Supreme Court Bar Association election, where Meghraj Pokharel, a candidate from the Democratic Lawyers Association (aligned with the Nepali Congress), was elected president.
The Unified Socialist-affiliated group also supported Pokharel. NBA elections are held every three years to select the leadership.
