Number of parties contesting elections rises sharply to 108

KATHMANDU: The extended deadline for political parties to register for the upcoming House of Representatives election ends today.

According to the election schedule approved by the Election Commission (EC), the original registration period was November 17–26. However, the EC extended it by four days following requests from parties that were still completing their registration.

As of last Friday, 108 political parties had registered to contest the elections. Parties registered by today will be eligible to participate in the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5, 2026.

This represents a notable increase compared to the previous election held in 2022, when only 84 parties contested. Some additional parties are still expected to register before the deadline today.

Meanwhile, only 23 political parties formed after the Gen-Z protests have received official approval from the Election Commission. Meanwhile, 16 parties are still in the registration process.
