Sankhuwasabha authorities urge tourists to avoid high-altitude trails amid continuous snowfall

KATHMANDU: The District Administration Office in Sankhuwasabha has urged trekkers and mountaineers to avoid high-altitude trekking routes, including the Makalu Base Camp trail, until November 1 due to ongoing rainfall and heavy snowfall across the Himalayan region.

Chief District Officer Sirjana Thapaliya said that since Tuesday, continuous rain and snowfall have been affecting the Makalu Base Camp and northern Himalayan areas, prompting authorities to issue a safety advisory. “Trekkers are requested to stay away from the upper Himalayan routes until mid-November as weather conditions remain harsh,” she said.

According to Thapaliya, snowfall above 4,000 meters has intensified cold conditions and could lead to shortages of food and other essential supplies in the highlands. The administration confirmed that over 200 climbers, including around 70 foreign nationals, are currently stationed at Makalu Base Camp.

Local officials reported persistent rainfall and snowfall in Makalu, Sabhapokhari, and nearby areas, warning of potential landslides and road blockages. The administration has also urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to remain alert in landslide-prone zones.

Authorities have instructed all ten local governments in the district to assist in relocating families living in high-risk areas. The administration has further appealed to the public to immediately report any flood, landslide, or disaster-related incidents to the District Police Office or the Emergency Operation Center.
