Trump and Xi hold talks as US-China trade deal hopes rise

SEOUL: US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have begun discussions aimed at reaching a deal that could potentially resolve the intermittent trade war between their nations.

So far, Trump’s Asia trip has delivered some of his desired outcomes, but Xi is not expected to yield the same way other leaders have, according to our correspondent.

A tenuous truce established in May had reduced retaliatory tariffs, which had previously exceeded 100% on both sides. However, tensions flared again over China’s access to semiconductors and the US’s access to rare earth minerals.

Key topics on the agenda include these trade issues as well as the future of Chinese-owned TikTok’s operations in the United States. Ahead of the meeting, Trump posted on Truth Social directing the US Department of Defense to begin immediate nuclear weapons testing.
