Madhesh CM Sonal to seek vote of confidence on Nov 8

JANAKPURDHAM: Madhesh Chief Minister (CM) Jitendra Sonal is scheduled to seek a vote of confidence on November 8.

A meeting of top leaders from the ruling coalition, held at the Chief Minister’s residence, decided to table the confidence motion on that date.

Following the vote of confidence, Chief Minister Sonal plans to expand his cabinet. Lawmakers from the Nagarik Unmukti Party and the Sanghiya Samajwadi Party—each of which has one member in the Provincial Assembly—also attended the meeting and expressed their commitment to support the government.

Sonal was appointed Chief Minister with the backing of 56 lawmakers from five parties: Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Nepal, Janamat Party, Maoist Centre, Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (LSP), and Unified Socialist.

Chief Minister Sonal said that coordination is ongoing with coalition partners to secure the vote of confidence. According to a leader involved in the meeting, the government expects to receive the support of 58 lawmakers.

In the 107-member Provincial Assembly, the government requires 54 votes to win the confidence motion. However, three lawmakers are currently suspended.

At present, the ruling coalition commands the support of 55 lawmakers, including 18 from JSP Nepal, 8 from LOSPA Nepal, 13 from Janamat Party, 9 from the Maoist Centre, and 7 from the Unified Socialist Party.
