UML youth wing protests government move to block Oli’s passport

KATHMANDU: The National Youth Association Nepal, a youth wing close to the CPN-UML, has objected to the government’s decision to block the passports of party chair and former prime minister KP Sharma Oli and others.

Issuing a statement on Tuesday, Association President Kshitiz Thebe warned that any decision taken without evidence or on the basis of prejudice and political revenge would be unacceptable.

“The government’s decision to block the passports of former prime minister KP Sharma Oli and others is objectionable,” the statement read. “The Gen-Z probe commission’s recommendation to impose restrictions without basis or evidence reflects pure suspicion and bias.”

The youth wing said it was ready to cooperate with investigations but criticized the move as prejudging individuals as guilty. “Declaring people criminals at the outset without investigation is objectionable,” the statement said.

The association also opposed the government’s move to pursue legal cases against UML Politburo member Mahesh Basnet, calling it an act of political retaliation.

On Sunday, the judicial commission formed to investigate the state’s handling of the Gen-Z protests recommended the government prevent five individuals, including former PM Oli, from traveling abroad.
