UK bars Israeli officials from major defense summit after recognizing palestine

LONDON: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has faced a second diplomatic setback from the United Kingdom within weeks.

After announcing recognition of Palestine as an independent state, the UK has now barred Israeli government officials from attending a major defense conference in London.

The move signals Britain’s growing distance from Israel’s policies on the Gaza war. The ban applies to the upcoming Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) summit in London, one of the world’s largest defense and security exhibitions.

According to summit organizers, the decision was taken in direct response to Israel’s escalation of military operations in Gaza. “It is now essential that Israel halts the war immediately, releases the hostages, and ensures humanitarian aid reaches the people of Gaza,” a spokesperson said. While Israeli state officials are barred, Israeli defense companies have still been permitted to participate in the exhibition.

The decision follows British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s July pledge to formally recognize Palestine as a state by September, a move that has already angered Israel. In response, Tel Aviv has warned it may reconsider its defense and security cooperation with London.

The Times of London reported that Netanyahu’s government is reviewing multiple options to respond to Britain’s policy shift. Analysts say the UK’s stance will likely intensify tensions between London and Tel Aviv, straining a historically close defense partnership.
