Israel orders Gaza evacuations as Trump renews ceasefire push

TEL AVIV: Israel has instructed Palestinians in parts of northern Gaza to evacuate, signaling plans to escalate military operations in the area.

Residents of Gaza City and Jabalia have been told to move south toward the coastal region of al-Mawasi, as Israeli forces expand their campaign westward, BBC reported.

The Hamas-run health ministry reported that at least 86 people were killed in Israeli strikes within a 24-hour period ending midday Sunday.

Among the victims were three children who died in a strike on al-Mawasi—an area designated as a “safe zone.” Their parents said they had relocated there following previous Israeli evacuation orders.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has renewed calls for a ceasefire and the release of hostages, urging both sides to “make the deal in Gaza.” On Saturday, Trump stated on Truth Social that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was currently negotiating with Hamas.

Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee confirmed on Sunday that the IDF is conducting operations in northern Gaza aimed at dismantling militant networks.

Residents and medical workers reported intensified airstrikes overnight, resulting in the destruction of several homes.

Gaza’s civil defense agency said at least 23 people were killed on Sunday alone. In one incident, five people—including three children—were killed when an Israeli airstrike hit a tent sheltering displaced families in al-Mawasi, near Khan Younis.

The victims were members of the Maarouf family, who had relocated to the area a month ago at Israel’s direction, according to BBC.

“We were sleeping on the ground when they bombed us,” said Iman Abu Maarouf, the children’s mother. “We did nothing wrong.” The father, Zeyad Abu Maarouf, confirmed their move to al-Mawasi was in compliance with Israeli instructions.

When asked about the incident, the Israeli military told the BBC it could not respond specifically without further details but insisted it complies with international law and takes steps to reduce civilian casualties.

Meanwhile, the IDF announced the death of 20-year-old soldier Sergeant Yisrael Natan Rosenfeld in northern Gaza. The latest wave of violence comes as international mediators resume efforts to end the conflict and secure the release of remaining hostages held by Hamas.
