KATHMANDU: The agitating Nepal Teachers’ Federation has announced the postponement of all ongoing protest programs following an agreement with the government.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Federation confirmed that protests have been called off after receiving a written commitment from the government to address key demands, including the passage of the new School Education Act by 15 Ashadh 2082. This commitment builds on a previous agreement between the two sides.
Teachers and education employees had been on strike under the coordination of the Nepal Teachers’ Federation National Committee.
The protests intensified in recent weeks, with large demonstrations—particularly in Kathmandu.
The decision to suspend the protests was made after the Chairperson of the Education, Health, and Information Technology Committee, along with the chief whips of the ruling parties, expressed their commitment to enact the School Education Act within the agreed timeframe.
Additionally, the Federation noted that several of its demands requiring Cabinet-level decisions have also been addressed.
As a result, all forms of educational strikes and street demonstrations have been halted effective immediately.
The Federation has urged all teachers to resume duties related to school admissions, regular classes, and examinations starting today.
However, the statement—signed by Federation President Laxmi Kishor Subedi and General Secretary Tula Bahadur Thapa—warns that if the government fails to pass the act within the stipulated period, the Nepal Teachers’ Federation will be compelled to launch even more intense street protests.
