KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has directed institutional schools within its jurisdiction to provide scholarships to students in accordance with existing rules.
The KMC has mandated that schools offer scholarships from grades 1 to 10 for the current academic session (2082 BS) and submit detailed reports to the metropolis.
Naba Narayan Poudel, Education Officer at KMC, stated that schools are required to allocate 10 percent of their total student enrollment for free scholarships, as outlined in Chapter 10 of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City School Education Management Regulations, 2074 BS.
In the academic session 2080 BS, over 13,000 students from 465 schools received various types of scholarships, and this number rose to over 19,000 students in the 2081 BS session.
This year as well, the city has urged schools to ensure inclusive scholarship distribution, prioritizing students who are academically meritorious, economically disadvantaged, disabled, helpless, or from marginalized communities such as women, Dalits, indigenous groups, conflict-affected families, and martyr families.
KMC has also issued a warning that schools failing to distribute scholarships as per the regulations or failing to submit necessary documentation may face revocation of their operating license or approval, as per Sections 56 and 57 of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Education Act, 2075 BS.
The regulations require that institutional schools provide scholarships to at least 10 percent of the total student population.
Additionally, schools must publicly announce scholarship opportunities via notice boards, collect applications from eligible students and their guardians, and ensure the distribution of scholarships by the first week of Jestha 2082 BS.
