Shekhar Koirala: Current coalition government will remain unchanged

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress central member Dr. Shekhar Koirala has stated that the current coalition government will not change at present.

Speaking at a Koshi Province-level interaction program on ‘Constitution Amendment and Challenges’ in Biratnagar, organized by the Professional and Intellectual Department and Nepal Democratic Lawyers Association, Dr. Koirala emphasized that the government will remain until its objectives, constitutional amendment, economic development, and good governance to create a corruption-free society, are achieved.

He suggested that constitutional amendments should be made through dialogue and consensus with opposition parties to ensure broader acceptance. He also highlighted that maintaining inclusivity in parliamentary elections and conducting direct elections would help resolve electoral issues and bring political stability.

Former Koshi Province Chief Minister Uddhav Thapa advocated for public discussions on constitutional amendments, while former Chief Minister Kedar Karki emphasized the duty to implement federalism, achieved through significant public sacrifice.

Senior advocate and constitutional expert Dr. Bhimarjun Acharya pointed out the need to amend linguistic accuracy, conceptual errors, and substantive provisions of the constitution. He argued that a politically neutral presidency and an independent judiciary would strengthen democracy.

NC central member and head of the Intellectual Department Dr. Dila Sangraula stressed that constitutional amendments are necessary for political stability and economic prosperity. Lawyers Association President Sitaram KC also emphasized that constitutional reforms are crucial to eradicating corruption and ensuring good governance.

NC Morang President Dig Bahadur Limbu and department’s provincial head Ram Thapa suggested that amendments should focus on human development.
