Snowfall likely in high-mountain areas today

KATHMANDU: Moderate snowfall is likely in some parts of the high-mountain and mountainous regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces today, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

The Department has also warned of the possibility of heavy snowfall at one or two locations in the high-altitude areas of Koshi and Bagmati provinces.

It stated that the water levels in the Bagmati, Kamala, Koshi, and Kankai rivers and their tributaries are expected to rise significantly, potentially reaching alert levels in some areas.

The Department also cautioned about the possibility of sudden increases in water flow in rivers and streams originating from the Mahabharat and Chure ranges across Koshi, Bagmati, and Madhesh provinces.

A heightened risk of flash floods has been predicted for parts of Bagmati Province, including Kathmandu Valley, Kavre, Sindhupalchowk, Dolakha, Makawanpur, Chitwan, and Sindhuli districts, as well as Madhesh Province, covering Bara, Parsa, Sarlahi, Rautahat, Mahottari, Dhanusha, and Saptari districts. Similarly, in Koshi Province, the districts of Sankhuwasabha, Taplejung, Panchthar, Tehrathum, Bhojpur, Dhankuta, Ilam, Jhapa, Morang, and Sunsari may also face flash flood risks.

The Department has urged the public to exercise caution, as potential rain and snowfall could trigger flash floods, landslides, and other hazards, affecting daily life, road and air transport, agriculture, tourism, and related sectors.

Meanwhile, Cyclone ‘Montha’, which developed in the Bay of Bengal, is currently moving toward India’s Andhra Pradesh coast. The Department noted that as the cyclone weakens, its effects may gradually shift north-northwest, reaching Nepal’s central region before moving eastward as a low-pressure system.
